LMNOPs put on Rockin’ Show
To the Editor:
Last Friday evening, we and several of our friends made our way down to The Spoke to hang out after dinner, and we were amazed by the entertainment we happened to stumble across.
The LMNOP’s – We assume composed of Western music students – put on one of the most amazing concerts we had ever seen, rivaling that of most famous acts. They presented a delightful mix of old school funk, jazz, ska and rock, all pleasantly integrated into a first rate performance, highlighted by the professionalism and skill of each individual player.
Whether it was an unexpected-yet-incredible drum solo performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick” or a full-blown rendition of Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September” with some incredible original material thrown in, they truly blew the crowd away.
Talent like the LMNOP’s is rarely seen – not only in indie music circles, but also by many professional musicians – and should be heard by everyone. It’s unfortunate that performances of this caliber are not better publicized, because this is extraordinarily high quality entertainment found right here on campus at no cost at all. Congrats to the LMNOP’s – you put on a hell of a show and we hope to catch the next one.

Concert Rocked
To the Editor:
On Friday night, the University Engineering Society put on a charity concert at The Wave. “Charity on the Rocks” was one of the better events – charity, or other – that we have attended at The Wave. Our band was lucky enough to plat at this event, which featured four other great performances. The night was topped off by a band that has been getting rave reviews as of late – The Elemeno Peas. Every person in attendance had an amazing time at the show, and it was great to see so many people out for a charity event.
An amazing job was done by even organizer Samir Raza, and everyone who was involved It is important that the Western student population continues to support charity shows and causes, such as the amazing show on Friday, to ensure our school community carries on with our tradition of giving.
So next time you see a poster for a charity event happening on campus, make sure you get out and show your support!

Battle of the Bands Tainted
To the Editor:
On Mar. 18, I attended the battle of the bands at The Spoke. The Elemeno Peas played and incredible set. Their songs were original and musically complex and the solos played by the bass, trombone, saxophone and guitar band members were impressive.
It was refreshing to hear a band with a sound that is different from all the music you hear on the radio, like Britney-esque pop or singers who scream all of their lyrics. The singer of the Elemeno Peas was very talented and polished, and you could tell from her singing that she is a vocally trained singer. Those who try to deny this are clearly tone-deaf or should get their ears checked. To be fair perhaps they just prefer singers who scream all of their songs.
Then the winners were announced I think the crowd was slightly shocked to hear The Elemeno Peas placed second. The band that won had very talented musicians as well, but as a whole The Elemeno Peas were a better band and should have won. The judges should have based their decision on the quality, variety, and level of difficulty of the song compositions as well as the talent of the musicians.
Instead, I feel that they based their decision on their personal tastes, since in all the categories I just mentioned, The Elemeno Peas were clearluthe superior band. Congratulations to The Elemeno Peas – you were the No. 1 band in my opinion.

Next Gig: Only Gig Scheduled at the moment unfortunately is the Music Faculty
Formal April 8.
Say their name out loud and you’ll get it. Sometimes there are live recordings that are infinitely better than live performances (Avril Lavigne, Our Lady Peace) and then there are acts that create such as great live show that recordings pail. The Elemeno Peas are the latter. This ten-piece funk band, made up largely of music students from UWO (with their bio emphatically proclaiming the inclusion of one History major) has chops to spare. I don’t often run across a band that is as universally strong musically as this one. While they pepper their sets with covers like soul standards such as Aretha Franklin’s Respect, the fact that their original stuff is as strong as any of the covers is testimony to their future as a band.
The crowd, though perhaps a little sympathetically stacked with music students went nuts over this group, singing along with their originals as well as the old standards. But above anything else, this band just looked like they were having fun and that fun was contagious. Not once did they sacrifice their musicality for a stage gimmick or joke, instead infusing their songs with an overall energy.
Their image may need a little work, as the combination of tucked in plaid and rock star among the group members didn’t sit well with me but their overall performance was spectacular. If you get a chance, catch these guys live. They don’t have a CD to recommend but if they did I would, though the tracks on their web page are poorly recorded live recordings that don’t reflect the talent of the band. Their sound and music is fun and a live horn section adds an amazing amount of energy to the act. Overall I’d give them 4 out of 5 with the definite potential for a perfect 5 with a couple of tweaks.
